Gebr. HELLER Maschinenfabrik GmbH is one of the leading German manufacturers of machine tools, with a focus on milling machinery. The company was founded in 1894 by Hermann Heller as a supplier of tools to the watch-making trade. The firm soon branched out into supplying a variety of products, such as chimney heads and emergency steel escape stairs, before finding its speciality with the manufacturing of machine tools in the 1900s. The portable oscillating saws manufactured by HELLER Group became indispensable to Swabian railway companies during the 1910s, but by 1925 the firm had expanded to sell its tools across Germany and Europe. These included some technologically advanced milling tools which, even by 1930 had incorporated hydraulic components, and HELLER was also a pioneer in the use of modular production lines.

The 1950s saw HELLER Maschinenfabrik GmbH develop electronic controls for its milling and drilling machines, as well as the first machining centre developed by the company. By this stage, HELLER company was benefiting from increased demand within the automobile manufacturing sector for reliable machine tools, and used this success as a springboard to international expansion. Subsidiaries appeared in the United Kingdom and then Brazil, and the United States in 1982. During the 1990s Gebr. HELLER Maschinenfabrik GmbH adapted to increased competition, developing flexible modular machining centres with maximum automation capabilities, and decided to focus even more closely on the needs of specific clients. At this point, the firm also entered the growing Chinese market, adding to its 2,000 staff members all the time. Despite this enormous growth, HELLER remains a family-run company. However, this has not stopped it constructing a global network of support functions, strengthening its reputation for German quality and reliability. This support has been backed up by the adoption of state of the art conditioning maintenance systems, which feedback to HELLER GmbH when clients' equipment needs servicing, allowing the firm to ensure that their machinery runs effectively for as long as possible. The firm also offers retrofitting of existing machines, to keep up with technological change, as well as spare parts and a full training service for the employees of its customers.
