DUNLOP

DUNLOP TYRES or DUNLOP for short was formerly a British based company, which was formed in Belfast, Ireland in 1888 for manufacturing high performance tyres. It was bought over by the American based company, GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY in 1999.

Global leader in the field of high performance tyre technology

The GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY has its headquarters in Akron, a city in Ohio, USA. The company sells DUNLOP TIRES OR DUNLOP TYRES as one of its brands. The history of DUNLOP TYRES as it was initially called began in 1888. It all started with a veterinary surgeon's love for his young son. When John Dunlop saw his young son having a hard time to ride his tricycle, the surgeon made tyres of canvas that were bonded with liquid rubber. These pneumatic tyres were used by Willie Hume to win a number of cycling races the following years. In 1922, DUNLOP's very first tyre using canvas casing and steel rods was introduced. This tyre had service life which was equivalent to three times the tyres that existed then. The year 1923 marked the debut of DUNLOP into the world of motor racing, a starting point that saw scores of prestigious motor racing victories over the years. To solve the problem of high speed on a wet road which makes tyres lose grip easily, the world's first aquaplaning tyre was introduced in 1962. The supreme performance and technology of DUNLOP came into prominence with DUNLOP's win of the very first ever London to Sydney Marathon in 1968. Spanning over 16,000 kilometres, three continents, Asia, Europe and Australia were covered during this marathon. The introduction of Warnair in 1999 marked the entry of the world's first ever tyre with sensors for detecting tyre pressure loss. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY's acquisition of DUNLOP did not stop the brand DUNLOP from expanding in any way. In 2007, Touch Technology tyres, which were the result of over 100 years of DUNLOP expertise, were introduced into the market. The year 2008 saw DUNLOP's strive for a more environmentally friendly world with the introduction of Ensave 97 tyres, which were made of 97 percent fossil-free materials.
