What are centrifuges and what are they used for?

A centrifuge is a device responsible for the separation of fluids or gas. The device applies a sustained centrifugal force (centrifugal force is an inertial force and appears when an object is moving in a curved path). Each centrifuge has got a spinning vessel, which at a high speed pushes denser materials to the outside. The materials which are less dense are moved to the center. A washing machine, that pushes outside the excess of water from clothes, is also an example of a centrifuge. Centrifuge machines are commonly used in laboratories.  

What are industrial centrifuges?

As any other type of centrifuges, industrial centrifuges are used for separating gas and fluids. There are two main types of industrial centrifuges: sedimentation (separating solids from liquids, or liquid from liquid) and filtering centrifuges (passing a liquid through a filtration media). Here are a few examples of industries, where industrial centrifuges are useful:

• Mining and mineral processing 

Different types of centrifuge machines

Apart from industrial centrifuges, there are other types of these machines. 

• Benchtop centrifuges - a benchtop centrifuge is a compact, space-saving type. It is very often used with small amount of material (i.e. yeast cells or erythrocytes). 
• Ultracentrifuges - those devices are used at very high speeds (up to 9 800 km/s²). There are preparative and analytical ultracentrifuges. 
• High-speed centrifuges - high-speed centrifuges are capable of generating very high acceleration while handling larger samples. 

Centrifuges can be also classified by their rotor design (fixed-angle, swinging head etc.) or by their intended applications (laboratory, analytical, gas etc.).
